Born in Dundalk, Co. Louth into the Macardle brewing family, Dorothy developed into a writer, playwright, activist and historian. An Irish feminist republican, her book The Irish Republic (1937) was one of the most influential accounts of the War of Independence and her Gothic novel Uneasy Freehold (1941) was republished as The Uninvited and made into a film.
